João was born in Tomar, a beautiful small city in the center of Portugal, but has lived most of his life in Lisbon. He studied pharmaceutical sciences in the University of Lisbon and finished his MSc in 2014. During this period, he went to the University of Liège, Belgium, to work on his master thesis. In 2016, João began his PhD at the University of Lisbon in the group of Dr. Pedro Góis and co-supervised by Dr. Gonçalo Bernardes. During the PhD, he worked on the development of novel ROS-responsive linkers for tumor-targeted drug delivery and on the discovery of new serine protease inhibitors. After being postponed 3 months due to Covid-19, he was finally able to graduate in 2020 and decided to continue his research career abroad.

João is currently a post-doc in the Gasser and Thomas group, working on the development of targeted Ru(II) cytotoxic complexes.

In his free time, João loves to play sports (all kinds of sports!), reading and playing games (videogames, board games, any games).
